略歴
20世紀のイギリスを代表する作曲家、指揮者、ピアニスト。オペラやバレエ音楽、オーケストラ、室内楽、歌曲から映画音楽まで、数多くの作品を残した。作風は、同時代の作曲家にありがちな前衛的な音作りとは異なり、イギリスの保守性を上手く活用し、機能和声語法を突き詰めた。指揮者としても有能であり、比較的早いときから指揮者活動をしており、のちにイギリス室内管弦楽団を手兵として指揮活動を続けた。
